Fresh Start new beginnings invites entries to Ipswich Dragon Boat Race

4th March 2019

Local charity Fresh Start new beginnings is challenging people across Suffolk to take part in a Dragon Boat Race on Ipswich Waterfront this summer

Entries are now open for a popular Dragon Boat Race which is taking place in Ipswich for the second year running and is organised by the charity Fresh Start – new beginnings in partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP). The event will see brightly-coloured dragon boats compete on the Ipswich Waterfront on Saturday 1st June 2019.

The race provides an opportunity for people to try out rowing and have fun on the Wet Dock adjacent to the Ipswich Waterfront with friends or colleagues this summer. With only 28 boats available, team spaces for the Dragon Boat Race are expected to go quickly and are available on a first-come first-served basis.

The 200m race is in support of Fresh Start – new beginnings (FSNB), an Ipswich-based charity that works with children who have been sexually abused, helping them to overcome trauma and give them the tools to overcome feelings of blame, shame and guilt. It also assists children with coping strategies and helps identify each child’s strengths and potential.

To enter the race, participants will need to register as a team of eleven (including a drummer) and pay a £30 registration fee per person. As the race is in aid of a good cause, the dragon boat racers will be challenged to raise £50 each for charity.

Spectators will be able to enjoy the race from Ipswich Waterfront, where fun activities for children including colouring competitions and face painting will also be available at the Dragon Boat Festival. The race is being supported by Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading port operator, which owns the Port of Ipswich as well as twenty other ports across the UK.

Patsy Johnson-Cisse, fundraiser for FSNB, said: “We were so pleased with the take up for our first Dragon Boat Race last year. There is already a lot of excitement around this year’s race, so we would recommend that anyone interested in taking part gets in touch soon to avoid missing out on a space.

“This race is a great team-building activity for businesses, as well as an unforgettable day out for a group of friends. To top it off, the race is in aid of a good cause and money raised will provide much-needed support to local children that have been through so much.”
