What is Fresh Start New Beginnings?

Fresh Start New Beginnings offers a variety of resources and support through the community chaplaincy project to assist you with resettling before and after you are released from custody.

How does it work?

You will be visited by someone from the project who will ask you some questions. This will help us identify the areas of support you may need.

MENTOR - If required, a mentor will work with you for 3 months before your release date and up to 12 months following release. Together you will put together a work plan to assist you in your rehabilitation. They will meet you on your day of release from prison to offer help and support from the outset.

HOUSING - If there are housing needs the project will work closely with agencies in an attempt to secure accommodation in time for your release. You will need to attend a 'Good Tenants Course' to show your commitment to our landlords.

EMPLOYMENT - We have contacts who are willing to offer work for ex-prisoners. We will work with you to access employment opportunities and where necessary assist with CV writing and identify other areas of support.

Who else benefits?

It is of course recognised that in addition to the difficulties that an ex-prisoner faces on release, the hidden victims of crime - families and friends - are often overlooked when we think through the pressures and stress people undergo at this time. Everyone who is personally connected to the individual who has been released from custody experiences a period of adjustment and uncertainty.

How can we help you?

  • mentoring
  • housing
  • employment
  • information and advice services
  • links with other important agencies
  • support with drugs and alcohol treatment
  • links with local faith communities
  • family support

One of the important roles of the project is to offer support for everyone concerned with your return to the community. This support has many forms including friendship and advice and guidance for both you and your family.

Am I Suitable?

Unfortunately, not everyone who applies will be able to be part of this project. This is due to the restrictions that their offence and criminal history brings about. It is a requirement that we disclose your current offence and some of your criminal history to the parties that will be involved in your support network. The project will also be seeking a risk assessment to be completed before any offer of employment or housing is made.
